Coil Pickling
What is coil pickling?
The following process is used for hot strip mill products
only.
Coil Pickling is a process in which any surface scale
or rust on the steel is removed to leave a clean and
protected substrate.
There are a number of types of steel pickling, Servosteel
use a modern push/pull shallow bath hydrochloric acid
line.
The coils of steel are un-wound in a very similar way
to that of de-coiling, they are passed through a leveling
head that lightly removes the parent coil shape and then
fed into the pickling line tanks. The first section being
a hot water rinse to wash any general dirt off the surface,
and then into the three continuous pickling tanks. The
tanks are made up of a steel outer shell with a heavy
granite liner. Inside the tanks is a varying concentration
of heated hydrochloric acid.
This environment is extremely
corrosive towards the parent steel coil, it dissolves
all of the iron oxide (rust and scale) that is adhered
to the surface of the steel. The tanks sit in a straight
line so that the steel can be passed automatically
from one to the next. When the steel surface has been
cleaned
it is then passed into a rinsing section of four more
tanks, finally dried and then lightly oiled before
it is wound back into a coil.
The process is highly automated and has numerous environmental
and effluent attachments that require constant monitoring.
When finished the coils can be delivered or go on for
further processing such as slitting and de-coiling.
