The Revolutionary SCS* at Servosteel
SCS is here!
Servosteel have become the first
European producers of SCS coil. For customers this means
a transformation in the way they think through their
steel processing options.
Imagine...
Imagine a steel processing system which:
- delivers beautifully clean steel coils and sheets
dry - no need for oil - which will not rust;
- delivers ready to paint steel;
- can remove all rust and perfectly flatten buckled
and edge waved coils;
- is environmentally friendly;
- above all, saves you money.
Too much to imagine? This is now a reality for customers
of Servosteel.
What is SCS?
 |
| The 'napkin' test. |
SCS is hot rolled black material which has been taken
through an environ-mentally friendly process using engineered
abrasive rolls and water to produce a 'napkin clean',
smooth, rust resistant surface.
The process does not use any chemicals, acids or heat.
Just water.
The finished product can be stored dry without the use
of oil or any other preservative and is rust resistant.
The system being used at Servosteel is a coil-to-coil
system. At the heart of the system is the brushing
unit. The material passes through a series of engineered
abrasive
rolls where rust and scale are removed. Water is
used to cool and lubricate the rolls as well as wash
away
the scale. The material is then dried without heat
and recoiled.
The use of roller levellers and a high level of tension
to the strip during the cleaning process produces an
exceptional degree of flatness (see coil conditioning
video on the right). As a result, in addition to being
used to
clean
material,
it can also be used to reclaim secondary coils.
One of the great advantages of the system is that once
existing rust has been completely removed there is no
need to apply oil to stop the rust coming back. Futhermore
the coil will remain in this clean rust-free state for
several months.

Who will SCS benefit?
SCS solves a number of problems
and therefore benefits a number of different post-
processing uses.
Ready to paint
 |
| Paint prep time/labour savings with SCS |
Operations like rollforming, stamping and tube manufacturing
will see immediate benefits as it means they can receive
ready-to-paint steel. Paint prep is simplified because
there's no dirt or grit to clean off and no oil to remove
with solvents. This means you'll enjoy labour savings
and reduced hazmat exposure, while your customers enjoy
a higher quality paint job on the SCS corrosion resistant
surface.
Ideal for base steel
While SCS gives a superior end-use product, it's clean,
oil-free surface also makes it the ideal base steel for
a number of processes including:
galvanizing
welded tube production
cold reduction
pre-painting
steel container production
cold reduction + galvanizing
Improves welding
Increases laser cutting speeds
Eliminates spring back
Benefits for welding
Test have shown that weld joins with steel which has
been through the SCS system are significantly stronger
than those under traditional systems. The SCS advantage
comes from higher weld integrity. A certain amount of
the weld arc’s energy goes to burning the oil on
HRPO sheets. This introduces even more contaminants to
a HRPO surface that is already fairly ‘dirty’ compared
to SCS. The net result is to reduce the integrity of
HRPO welds compared to SCS welds. User experience gained
since the 2003 tests reinforces this finding.
Roll Forming
Bending and Braking SCS can lower forming costs.

Many roll formed products specify cold rolled low carbon
steel for its formability and its attractive surface.
But surface oil can gum up tooling and cause slip.
SCS offers cold rolled attributes at hot rolled prices
and no oil. The thin wustite layer is bonded to the steel
and stays intact on both outside and inside bends - no
splitting or microcracking. Paint adherence remains excellent
on these bends.
Tube Production
There are huge potential savings for tube producers.
Tubes produced from SCS may benefit from lower base
material and freight costs. But that's just the beginning
. . .
SCS Advantages over P&O:
- improved weld strength,
- reduced welding fumes,
- no hazardous post pickling,
- no oil to remove,
- no slipping in tube mill.
SCS Advantages over Hot Roll:
- SCS removes & inhibits rust,
- no dirt/scale to foul tube mill,
- no dirt/scale when painting.
Other SCS Advantages:
- much flatter material,
- coil breaks are removed,
- faster welding,
- eliminates oxide primers,
- 'cold rolled tube' product line.
