Wire Rod Pickling
What is wire rod pickling?
The following process is used for rod, bar and wire
mill products in coil form
This process is used to remove surface scale and rust
on coils of wire/rod. Unlike the
coil pickling continuous
process, this is a batch process
.i.e. It uses a number of tanks which the material is
passed to in turn via an overhead crane system.
The material is picked up by a large overhead hook.
It is then moved to one of seven stand alone hydrochloric
acid tanks where it is submerged. The acid reacts with
the surface of the coil and dissolves all of the scale
and rust, the coil is picked up and gently turned during
the process to ensure that the laps of steel separate
to leave no touching areas. When pickled the coil is
lifted into a high pressure jet wash where all traces
of the acid are removed, it is dipped into a final neutralizing
tank and then placed into any one of a number of coating
tanks. Coatings such as lime, phosphate or a soap based
lubricant are used, one or a combination of more than
one being nominated prior to processing by the customer.
The coatings both protect prior, and lubricate the product
when it goes to its next process. Customers may carry
out drawing of the rod to a closer gauge tolerance size
or perhaps cold heading of forging might take place.
As with Coil Pickling a significant amount of work goes
into the environmental and effluent control of the process.
